Mariah’s Six Super Stellar Ways to Beat Getting Sick

It happens to everyone, you are going about your life and bam, you catch it. The common cold, the flu… it happens to everyone, and it always seems you get sick when you need to be healthy and have lots going on! Most people can heal on their own and quite quickly… my circumstance is a little different. When I was 18 I had to have my spleen removed due to seven or eight cysts making a home in there.

So what does that mean?

Basically anytime I would get sick it would be a huge deal. If I caught a sore throat, it would progress to a full on double ear infection and throat infection the next day. If I caught the flu, it would be much worse. There were times in my life when I was so stressed out from school and friends and then I would catch something minor that would progress into something terrible, which would freak me out even more. I have felt like I was dying on multiple occasions. After going on round after round of antibiotics and having my body feel like it was going to fall apart, I decided I had to make a change.

I started doing research into holistic remedies as I have been on countless rounds of antibiotics, which are terrible for your gut and rack havoc on your system. A lot of this was trial and error, but I can truthfully say what works and what doesn’t, as my system is a lot more sensitive than the average person’s.

1. Sleep
This goes at the top of the list because it’s the most important. When I was in college I was sick almost all the time, and I couldn’t figure out why. I started analyzing my habits and realized that my sleeping pattern was way off balance. I was staying up way too late and sleeping in, or sometimes waking up early to make it to class after staying up to finish a project. Long story short I started regulating my sleep so I could get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. This has worked wonders as your body heals while it is sleeping.

2. Kombucha
That weird fermented tea everyone is talking about? Yeah. This stuff works. I love kombucha so much, it has kept me healthy, cured hangovers, cut colds in half, you name it, kombucha does it. I have made it before and it is super easy, although I have been buying it recently. It is kinda weird and for a newbie to kombucha the scoby (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) can be disturbing for some, but I promise its good for you.

3. Hot beverages
Tea and chicken noodle soup. Heat up and repeat. Who knows why chicken noodle soup is so good when you are sick, but it really does work wonders. Also, keeping hydrated and ingesting as much tea as you can will really help your cough and relaxes you as well.

4. Hydrate before you Die-drate
Drink as much water as you can, even though you don’t want to when you are sick. All the nose blowing and snot dripping is water leaving your body! We are more than 75% water, so when you are not feeling your best, its essential to keep yourself hydrated so your body can heal.

5. Wear socks
I know it seems silly but you lose so much body heat from your head and from your feet. Wear socks and beat that heat loss! Plus it feels oh so good to be all warm and toasty when you are getting those chills. So stay warm even when a fever hits. Its the key to getting better.

6. See a doctor
Sometimes, you have to suck it up and see a doctor if your symptoms progress really fast to something worse than the common cold or flu. The last thing you want is to catch an ear infection or something worse because you didn’t want to fork over the cash. Getting sick costs money. To have a quality life you have to put your health first, and that means forking over the cash.

In closing, getting sick sucks! I know. As I’m writing this I am getting over a cold. I’ve applied the tips in this post and my cold is way less intense than it could have been, and I am getting over this sickness on my own without antibiotics! Huge deal for me. I wish you luck and hopefully you will add kombucha to your daily diet for a health boost, its that great. Beat the sickness blues with some laughter too, I promise you will get better soon!
