On my last day of my nanny job, I took the two kids, one is a girl and one a boy, to their classmates birthday party. Now the kids whose birthday was today were also one girl and one boy, but what I witnessed from the parents was quite astounding.
During the party snack break the hosting mom had segregated the kids into a boy and girl table. My questioning is why? Siblings wanted to sit together, and parents were puzzled. The Winnetka Mom had even chosen separate snack pairings for girls and boys.
The Winnetka Mom got upset when the boy I was watching reached for the Frozen snacks which were intended for the girls. She insisted that he eat the Hot Wheels snacks. I felt like I had witnessed how influential a parent is over their child's identity. Or at least they try.
The point I'm making here is that it was a kid's party. Who the hell cares who sits where or eats what. That's all a waste of time and quite a lot of boys enjoy Frozen and girls, myself included, enjoy Hot Wheels.
It will be interesting to see the shift in people's perspectives over the years about what gender actually mean. I think this is just the beginning of ultimate customization over an individual's gender, appearance, even what planet they live on.
Moral of the story, don't freak out if your son wants to wear a skirt for the day or if your daughter decides she wants to be a a daddy when she grows up. They are kids, let them imagine while they can.
